Limitations of the Radiance calculation methods

  1. The ray-tracing engine only follows light backwards from measurement points to sources.
  2. Spectral rendering is not directly supported, radiation is sampled for three channels: R, G, B.
  3. Specular reflection from curved specular surfaces (curved mirrors) cannot be calculated. Only planar mirror surfaces are supported.
  4. None of the BRDF types in Radiance offers a complete solution to the global illumination equation. Only highlights from light sources will use this data properly. Interreflections will consider the entire BRDF to be “diffuse” rather than directional.
  5. Polarization effects cannot be simulated.
